So you have a space that you know needs some help, but aren’t sure how to make it look, feel, and perform to the best of its abilities. In today’s day in age you have a few options on steps you can take to love the space you live in. Enter the Interior Designer, a professional who can take your style and budget and transform your space into the place you want to come home to everyday. But where do you start? I’d say your first question you should ask yourself is “Do I want traditional in person Interior Design service or does E-Design work better for me?”
E-Design is a fairly new, online based design service concept that opens up the potential for receiving a great design from anywhere in the country since there is no need to meet in person. Everything is done online or over the phone. It can fit any budget and the upfront package pricing allows the client to know exactly what they are getting for a flat fee, as typically in person interior designers charge an hourly rate. eDesign is a great tool for people who love to decorate but maybe they just need a little bit of help pulling everything together, someone who has a DIY spirit but just needs some construction documents and a plan in place or someone who just wants a great design that’s convenient and more affordable. The cost savings comes to the client as they are providing their own measurements and photos, rather than paying the fee for the designer to do it, as well as doing the install themselves. When working with an eDesigner, make sure they offer tools to help you walk through the homework portion of the process like a photo guide and a measurement guide so you don’t miss sharing important information with your Interior Designer.
It’s also beneficial to the client who wants a faster turnaround. A typical design process can be wrapped up in a few weeks rather than a few months as with traditional services. Lead times are shorter as well since the items spec’d are in stock items as opposed to custom pieces.
Because the internet allows you to pick from designers across the country it’s important to do your homework. While some offer a too good to be true pricing package, make sure you read what services are included in the fee. Can you make changes, is there a floor plan included to tell you where to put everything? Also, what are the credentials of the designer? Typically, the price reflects the years of experience the designer has along with perhaps licensing. If a designer is listed as NCIDQ, ASID or IIDA, then you know you are hiring a professional with proven knowledge and experience in the field of design. And while some sites offer just furniture and accessories, others can be able to assist with a wider variety or projects like kitchen and bath designs and even exterior living like patios and decks. Unfortunately for some, the design process ends at the final proposal presentation. E-Design does not include any purchasing or installation, which is why it’s more affordable and allows for design for the masses.
If you feel like you want or need an interior designer to be with you at every stage of the design process, then eDesign may not be for you and that’s OK too!
In Person Interior Design
If you want a beautifully designed space but don’t necessarily enjoy the process or you want custom pieces that no one else has, then going full service is definitely the way to go! While hiring a local designer will be more expensive than hiring an eDesigner, you will get a wider variety of services than you ever could with an eDesign package.
Traditional service will typically have everything an E-Design would include, but also, in-person consultations, sourcing, and purchasing of goods through vendors they know and trust. And while the options are unlimited here, it does come with a longer process, so keep that in mind. A local interior designer can also be present for installations and can even personally style your space, while an eDesign package gives you the tools to do it yourself.
As a designer its great to see that good design is becoming more accessible to masses, depending on your needs, either route could be a great option for your needs.
